The SM-34, SM-50 and SM-60 need a base of at least 9" height to sit on. This allows for foot throttle travel and raises the lower die to the proper working height.
The best arrangement is a steel base as shown at right, although wood timbers will work in a pinch. Concrete is not recommended for this part. The floor upon which the hammer and base sit can either be dirt, 6" reinforced concrete or, the best, a separate pad, 36" x 72" x 24" deep, which is isolated from the existing slab and poured flush with the floor.
